Nice beard by Ghost-Peacock Nice beard by Ghost-Peacock
Wanted to draw kinda realistic animals. Can't do all the ponies so I just stuck with Discord and Celestia then added Fluttershy last minute.
I based Celestia off of classical unicorns that had beards and while draconequus aren't chimeras, I thought it'd be funny if Discord's snake tail really was a snake.

I'm with *CastoroChiaro; the fetlocks are a wonderful touch. :aww: I almost like it as much, if not more, than her without. :) Her beard on the otherhand, is rather comical. :giggle: C'mon Discord, you know you want to tug and stroke Celestia's beard. ;P Hahahahaha I totally love your realistic take on the three here. :aww: Fluttershy doesn't look like she wants to be there with Discord and Celestia all in each other's faces like this. XD Discord's smug expression turned out pretty awesome too. I love the snake tail for Discord though; I think it'd work well for him. :P Hahaha

I kinda dig Celestia with colorful fetlocks, I might incorporate that into my designs for her. If that's alright, of course.

ALSO APPARENTLY THE BEARD IS A PRETTY BIG DEAL.

It's you're design. Do whatever you want. It'd fine by me =) Plus I got that from someone else but I can't put my thumb on who.

And yeah I never thought it mattered so much as to whether or not ye' old unicorns had beards or not...

I like it. You don't.
Rather than saying "not really" why can't you just say "whatever floats your boat"?

I know for a fact that in some versions of unicornlore they had beards. Some Scottish, some not. They are mythological creatures meaning that A) they don't exist B) there are so many stories about them that not ONE is the way it has to be.

This picture is part of a series in which I draw my favorite characters in my own, original style. And in my original style, I like drawing unicorns with beards. Why does Celestia have one if she's an alicorn not a unicorn? Because for alicorns I like to combind elements of all three pony species. So she is tall like an earth pony, light like a pegasus and locky like a unicorn.

*Ahem* My point being that is is all my headcanon. I like my realistic unicorns and alicorns looking this way and I'm not the only one to think so [link]. I understand that you were trying to say that you thought it looked weird on MLP characters but you came off as if you were trying to say that there is a certain way realistically drawn ponies should look. Spoiler alert, there isn't. I can draw the ponies any way I want just as you can.

 Don't bother. He doesn't even know that alicorn is a term made up by a novelist and accepted by the fandom: [link]

Right. "alicorn" is actually the term for the mythical substance that makes up unicorn horns. X'D

Dude. You really think that website has facts lol? I'm telling you, they do not have beards... THEY HAVE MUSTACHES. But no, really, they do not have beards. And also, Celestia is an Alicorn, so she most definitely would not.

I've seen plenty of images of the Scottish unicorn with beards from my mythology books, thank you. Google search it–lots of beards.

Oh no, a lot of things have a stereotype. You do realize, that is the same as saying wizards all have beards too right?
I bet you don't even know that when a Wizard dies he or she becomes a Unicorn.

If you feel like insulting my intelligence further, I'm afraid I'll have to start correcting your grammar as well as your facts. I didn't say "all" unicorns had beards, but a lot of classical unicorn art portrays the beasts with beards. For you to claim otherwise is a gross understatement of Ghost Peacock's own research of the mythical animals. Also, not all wizards become unicorns when they die. Some unicorns are simply born the beasts of purity.

Wow. Lol. Done talking to you. "If you feel like insulting my intelligence further,"?
Yes, I'm totally saying "YOU READ SOMETHING WRONG, YOU'RE STUPID."
ALICORNS are born beasts of purity.
And okay, maybe that's true, but I hate to break it to you, but Celestia is not one of them.
Don't take something that is set, change it, then get mad when people say "Wtf". Just, wow.

Let's see if you won't respond:

Yes, that is basically what you're doing. You're saying I'm ignorant on this subject. Again, I didn't read anything wrong. I know a fair amount about mythological creatures.

Unicorns appear before the pure of heart and virgins.

Celestia is a character in a cartoon. Why are you even debating the accuracy of this in the first place by that token?

I think you mean something that "was said," not "was set."

mythology creatures i believe the book is called but what you just said as it in there as well, and its true too that only a few number of wizards would become Unicorns when they pass on.
^^ its interesting what you can find in a book special the old ones.

There are a lot of books under that title. To be honest, my book collection has shrunk lately. There are plenty of differing points of view on mythology. I remember reading an "A-Z" guide of mythological creatures in my school library. It taught me the difference between the unicorns, pegasi (if we can call them that), and qilin. I can't remember if alicorns were ever addressed. Doing a general check on wikipedia, it says that alicorns are merely a unicorn's horn and that a novelist made up the term for it being a unicorn/pegasus hybrid: [link] It's too bad that the article's a stub, but at least it has sources.

For that matter, the wikipedia article for unicorns features a lot of unicorns with beards: [link] It was a stylistic choice by a variety of artists!
